Propoxyphene Overdose Help

Propoxyphene Overdose Help

Propoxyphene (Darvon) is used to treat mild to moderate pain. It is an opiate drug and like all opiates, your body can build a tolerance over time. Once tolerance builds then your body will require higher doses of propoxyphene in order to feel the same effects. Some addicts will even combine this drug with other drugs or alcohol so that they can feel a stronger effect. This can lead to overdose which can ultimately lead to death.

Propoxyphene Side Effects

Common side effects for propoxyphene include the following:

  • Dependence
  • Dizziness
  • Delirium
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Constipation

More severe and less common side effects include these symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Stomach pain
  • Weakness
  • Vision loss

Not everyone experiences these side effects but they can be dangerous. Most side effects are less dangerous when taken as prescribed. The problem starts once the patient begins to build a tolerance and dependency on propoxyphene. This is the beginning of an addiction, which can lead to overdose.

Propoxyphene Overdose Symptoms

Not always is an overdose mean that the user has taken too much of the drug. Sometimes an overdose can occur when it is combined with other drugs or alcohol. Regardless, the effects could be deadly. Some of the signs of an overdose can include the following:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Hearing loss
  • Low or no breathing
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Rash
  • Vomiting

If you or someone you know may have overdosed on propoxyphene then you will need to seek medical attention immediately. Before you call, try and get together the following information:

  • The patient’s age and weight
  • What is the name of the drug used?
  • What condition is the patient in?
  • When was the last time the drug was taken?
  • How much was taken?
  • Does the individual have a prescription for this drug?
